Chemical etching (also sometimes referred to by its English name, etching) is a process that consists of removing one or more layers of material using an acid-based solution.
Part of the material is protected from the etching process by a resistant protective layer. The material is etched around this protective layer, which defines the shape of the image or information to be engraved.
